Exploring
and evaluating promotional material for existing films.
Choose a film (Broken City http://www.brokencitymovie.com/) and explore the promotional
material (posters, website, trailers etc) used to market the film. For each website
and poster, you should discuss:
· and
identify the elements of design, (colour/colour scheme, tone, space, etc);
The use of cool colours (blue and green) and sticking to a small colour plate of black, green, yellow and black, it makes the poster and website very simple and direct which makes it easy and crisp to look at. The poster is not busy as per say for the amount of things happening; however, there are many lights and not to many places where it is plain and nothing is happening. This is to suggest that in the film (note: this is just an estimated guess) things to everyone else may seem normal, but in reality a lot is happening in a lot of areas and there is no where to hide. But back onto the topic of element of design the use the colour, tone, space etc to make the film clear and crisp, connect the title to the colours of the background image.
· and
identify the principles of design (composition, balance, emphasis, repetition,
etc);
The one and only poster at present for this film has a real emphasis on the title and faces of the two main characters. They do this by the sharpness of their faces and the title (also by using the metallic font with the film title and sub titles).
The poster uses balance in the sense that there are many elements and they are balanced out between both sides of the poster. However the side in which Russel Crowe's character is on it lighter and the side when Mark Wallerberg's character is on is darker and he blends in more with the background. This is to suggest that Crowe's character is in the limelight and in front of all the publicity (as also seen by the trailer) and this is in contrast to Walleberg's character who is behind the scenes as such and works behind the scenes. ***** In the website, They use slightly incorrect balance (further explained on previous post) to draw the attention to the characters on the left where as when you look to the text on the right it is more obvious to see the text because it contrasts the black.
Emphasis is on the titles and faces of the characters because of the sharpness in contrast to the blur and black colours of the background.
The only repetition in this film is the same colour used in the background and the title.

· the
overall feel developed for each film’s promotional materials (is it clean,
crisp and bright or dark, moody and grungy)? ;
It is clear, crisp and dark and this gives it the proper feel that i believe that the film is trying to convey (as explained further in many other post)

· whether
there are a variety of promotional posters for the film?
No, there is only the one but this is because the film is only just completed and the film is coming out in 2013 and is not an anticipated film.

· how
the website is laid out. (Look at the menu system, font selection and how
information or promotional materials are accessed);
All the titles are the same font and colour. The subtext is a different font (so it is easily readable in the small size) however it is still the same colour.

· the
website’s effectiveness in appealing to an intended target audience and
identify who the target audience is;
I believe that this film is good for targeting it's target audience because of its clear and crisp format. I think, however that it many be slighly boring and need a few more elements in the website to make it more intersting. Target audience is approx. late teens to mid/late 20s.

· what
you like/dislike about the promotional material.
I like the crispness of the film and the consistency of the colours and sounds, I do think it needs more for it. Posters, pictures, elements but I hope that this will come in time.
