Editing/Sound plan

Pace/rhythm

What happens?
How is this effective
The are six cuts between BF and Roxy walking to the microphones and to BF introducing themselves
It is exciting and is building tension
Cuts occours to the beat of the music
It links what the viewer see's to what they hear, and thus bringing a beat to the scene. It also brings tension and excitement because there are quite a few
Slows down at understandable with the music
Still in beat and same reason and in music
Very fast cuts at the last GUNNNNN
It is exciting and at the climax of the song

Creative Editing:

What happens?
How is this effective
The first scene where it is set in the jail, there is no cuts
It is a slow scene as it is focused on the conversation, not much tension is being built
There are many ____ where BF will do something as a contortionist and then it will cut to the press conference where is is doing the same thing
It is linking the two settings together and expressing how the theater puppet show is a metaphor for the press conference
Has news papers transperant in front of a black and white printer
It shows that it has been all over the news and the titles that reference to other songs from the film
The film has been sped up
It is imitating the old style film making it seem like an old style news report

Sound

Music

What happens?
How is this effective
At the very beginning of the scene there is trumpets and a drum symbol
It shows that this is at the start of the scene and something new is happening
Puppet show music, when in the theater scene
It assits with the image creating of how the press conference is like BF personal puppet show
When they sing “Oh yes oh yes etc” the pace of the music quickens
It shows a change in what they are singing, they are singing the message that they want the press to follow
Slow down “Understandable”
Because BF is singing about the morals of it all, telling the audience that it is nothing harsh or quick, but slow and easy to understand
Last chorus, starts slow and quiet and then builds in volume, holding on the last line
It builds up tension and adds excitement and rush and caioticness to the scene and how everyone is frantically and confidentally saying “They both reached fro the gun”
Softer quiter and lighter music
It is like taking a breath after all the rush of that pervious scene

Dialogue:

What happens?
How is this effective
BF and Roxy are talking over how they are selling them the idea “we both reached for the gun”
It shows that they are planting an idea in the press that they “both...” it shows us that this is not true and they are using the media to their gain
MS: “As you know my paper is dry, do you have any advice for young girls who want to avoid a life of jazz and drink”
They are the press and she has been put on trial for something to do with jazz and drink.
Shut up dummy” then goes to the theater where BF is a contritious
It links the ideas together and shows why they protray them that way. Roxy, being only useful as an image but BF is actually doing all the work
While the press is asking Roxy questions and roxy is answering the presses questions they are sining
Bring the musical genre, into play and because the film is about musicals and jazz, by making the film a mix of a musical, it highlights the genre and successfully links it to the themes of the film.
Both reached for” “the gun” is sun by BF but his mough is not moving
Shows that he no longer has to do anything to get his message across to everyone, the press has taken over that.
it seems everyone these days is rooting for roxy hart”
They treat criminals like celebrities
The second “Understandable” Miss Sunshine joins in
That the BF has suceeded and they press now believe that it is plain and simple and “Understandable” why roxy shot the man
The voiceover, dialogue of a news report talks about Roxy
It is talking about her court case and how she has become poplour, it shows her amount of publicity as well as seeing the outcome of the previous number
Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Ms Sunshine”
Show's Miss Sunshines importance in the press

Effects

What happens?
How is this effective
Sound of camera flashes
Brings the feeling of a high end press conference
Sounds of puppets being wound up
To enhance the feeling of a puppet show
Added tin hits etc for when when questions are asked
Once again, poplour in puppet shows. It highlights the question
Final chorus the tapping of shoes is used as a beat
Creates a beat to it
There is no sound effects in the news presentation
This add to the effect of an old time news report where there is not much recorded sound

Mise-en-scene Paragraph (Chicago) Draft 1

The mise-en-scene in the scene from Chicago, enhances and depicts how the setting of the film effects the main characters. Shown through the heavy black doors with crème pillars of the courthouse and the layered theater room with red velvet curtains express the dominance and wealth of the court and importance of show-biz in Chicago in the 1920's and the successful characters are further shown though the use of costume. Miss Sunshine's character is show through her pearl necklaces and warmth of her clothing show her superiority against the other members of the press who wear only thin suits and fedoras. Similar to Billy's Flynn's “big boss” character, through his large, fur lined coat, scarf, suit and fedora, expresses that he is rich and powerful to his success in his high end role as a lawyer in Chicago. Flynn's character is further enhanced by the actor, Richard Gere's portrayal of him as Flynn and Roxy's, played by Renee Zellweger, characters interact. Roxy's desperation to be in the spotlight is balanced by Flynn's control and accustom to playing the press creates a balance between both character and a clearer understanding of the drive of the characters. Their performance in the spotlight is portrayed by the successful use of colour and lighting and by tinting the theater stage with a red glow, especially on the press, conveys to the audience that it is dangerous what they are believing and Flynn and Roxy are using the press to help her get away with murder. Increasing the effect of this, Roxy and Flynn are both in a calmer, blue light conniving the press that they are blameless and genuine. Because of the use of mise-en-scene in the scene, the viewer is able to get a depthen knowledge of the characters.

General Cinematography Evaluation
What types of shots are used to convey the intended message in this scene?

Billy flinn and Roxy are in domintally medium close ups or closer to alert to the audience that they are the focus point of the film contrasting how the press is shown is domintally in medium long shots showing most of them in each shot.
An extreme long shot, showing the viewer the stage with the press, Billy Flinn, Roxy and an audience visible to the shot. The press are behind Flinn and Roxy and are in an arc above them and with the audience in the foreground the audience can tell that Finn and Roxy are using the press to make the audience believe that roxy's story is true.

How does the use of framing convey information to the audience; by hiding or showing specific elements and information.
A shot looking up at Flinn show him controlling what Roxy says and does shows the audience that by Flinn talking for roxy, the are together more powerful.
Describe how the camera position affects each shot?

In the press conference Miss. Sunshine is seen at a low angle, however when in the theater she is usually at a high angle creating the impression that to Billy Flinn she is not that important but to the audience she is important. (This is the same with her in the thirds)

What type of camera movement takes place and how does it enhance the shot?

The camera pans around Ms sunshine when she is typing the story and speeding up impling the phrase “news is circulating” for the camera circulates Ms sunshine at an increasing speed.
Does the cinematographer make specific use of under or over exposure to convey a message?

The atmosphere of a theather is enhanced by the lack of exposure to natrual light and only stage lights are used on characters, like a show.

Framing

What happens?
How is this effective
Opening Shot of scene: Roxy and other girl are talking. Roxy is in the foreground and OG in the back. OG is telling Roxy that she should be in the spotlight (she is trying to put her off)
By having OG in the background and in a MLS it shows her as being small and no longer the center of attention.
When actually talking to press: Billy Flin (BF) eyes are in the top and right third, where as roxy is in the middle and to the left
BF is constantally looking down on her. This shows that he does not feel she matters as such, but it is more the job
In the puppet show: BF is on the left third and in the middle. This time, roxy is on the top thrid and the left still
That Roxy is more in the spotlight, however she is sitting on BF
Miss Sunshine: In the “reality” she is always in the bottom third where as in the puppet show she is always in the top third.
In reality BF is looking down on her, but in the puppet show he makes her believe that she is powerful and on top
Total Puppet shot: Billy flin and Roxy are in the center and the reporter puppets are in an arc behind them. There are people in the audience
The reporters are acting like R&BF halo. The people in the audinece are the audience (read papers, jury etc) They are watching the show and watching everyone dance, and since the objective of a puppet show is for the person to convince the audience that their hand-held puppet is real . This is like what is happening with roxy – to believe she is telling the truth.
Typing Pool: while MS is typing she starts in the top third and then pans to the bottom as she hands over her aritcle
It is saying that she seems to be in control, but what she is writing is what BF has told her so she seems less significant
Of news papers: It shows heading “They both reached for the gun”
It shows that BF did his job and it worked
Procuter: He is at a high angle and his eyes are at a direct line with the top third and left thrid
It shows that he is a high figure and powerful

Roxy tatoo: Left and just under the middle. And the short around it fades
The name is the last thing you see
Exposure:

What happens?
How is this effective
1st Understandable...” Everyone goes into the dark where as BF and Roxy stay in light
It shows that everyone else is “in the dark” and don't know anything, where as BF and Roxy know
Second Understandable: He dropps roxy and then dances with Miss Sunshine, she is in the light.
He is no longer intersted in roxy but is with MS who believes she is right because she is out of the dark
When each reporter talks they go into the spotlight
Focus is on them
Camera Position

What happens?
How is this effective
Holding puppet strings: BF is on a very high angle shot
It show that he is in total control of everyone
Opening scene: OG and roxy are show at high angles
It shows that they are both powerful.
New confrence: BF and Roxy are at high angles where as the media are at low angles

News confrence: Angle of BF and Roxy drop to a high angle when roxy inturrupts
That her interupting is making them both look weaker

The puppet show: on looking at the whole show there are at a high angle but looking at the media by itself they are at a low angle
For people looking at the show they are both very powerful but when you trully look at the media there are low
Looks down on women
Women aren't strong positions
Focus

What happens?
How is this effective
Opening Scene: When OG tells Roxy “what i'm meaning is, don't let him hog the spot light.” the focus is on roxy and OG is blurred
It makes it seem like OG is just a little voice in the back of roxy's head. She is also in the dark so it is bad
On Close ups of BF and Roxy the media is blurred
To give more focus to them
By the fourth time at “oh yes oh yes oh yes they both...” The speed of the stage has increased and everyone is moving fast so the camera is hardly focusing
It is that that everyone is going around saying things that they don't know is true
This stops when BF says the last reached for the.. then it goes fast again until the word gun has finished
They are calm for the most of it, but when gun in mentioned – they race around saying this and it is really just getting her story out
Perspective

What happens?
How is this effective
In the press conference there is always BF/Roxy and the press in the shot
It shows that they are both together in the same place and seen as partners together
and he stole my heart away..” You can see roxy's back and BF is holding her and controlling what she is doing: makes her look like a ragdoll puppet
That, like the actuall puppets like this, from the audience it looks like she is talking but BF is really doing it all. It shows how she is quite insignificant and it is really BF's show

Notes for Mise-en-scene

Lighting

What happens?
How is this effective
BF and Roxy at the press conference always have full light on their face. Where as the press are shaded slightly
They are the “stars of the show”
In the stage MS has light on her face
She is important to the “show”
In the press confrence there are constant flashes of lights
To show the cameras and it highlighs how this is a high case
The lights slowly come up as the final oh yeses.. come out
It is following the volume and helps
The assistant da harrasont is in the light

Roxy's husband in always in the shade
He isn't unimportant and no one cares about him

Colour:

What happens?
How is this effective
In the jail it is dark and has a blue tint to it
It is cold and dark in the prison
Normal lighting in court room and outside
It is the supposidally “real world”
The stage has a red tint to it
It is about murder = blood. It is also dangerous what they are doing because it is lying to court
The press is always red but roxy and BF are blue
Because they are seen as the innocent and truthful characters
The strings are red
It is dangerous the hold BF has on the press
Black and white when they recap how the city of chicago reacts to Roxy
It shows the time of the film and how it isn't that intersting because you know why they are saying this all. It is also calming for the audience because after all the colour from the musical number it is peaceful to have a bit of black and white.

Setting

What happens?
How is this effective
The jail has black bars and bricked concreate walls
It is a low, dark jail but isn't seen as dirty as white does
Chicago, 1930's (?) and the court house has giant detailed colloums
Shows the time and location. However not much of this is shown meaning at this scene (especially) is not important and the location does not show where we are
The theater, with layered roofs, gloden pillars and lighting surrounding the stage
The press conference is like a show, you want them to stay interested but nothing that happens on stage is really true
It shows a scene of chicago with tall industrial buildings with spires on the roofs. Very the same and concrete buildings (not glass etc)
One again, time a setting. Shows that it is set in the times in which chicago is famous for it criminals so the images are reconsisable.
Roxy's house is messy with all her clothes everywhere
Everyone is excited and just grabbing and/or dropping

Props fedora or trilbe

What happens?
How is this effective
At the start roxy is looking and reading her diary
She likes looking at her life and it shows that she want broadway
The cameras and microphones are old style
It feflects the time of the setting
Roxy is wearing a silk scarf and her hair is neat and dressed
She has gotten dressed up at this and it is quite reliant on the looks
Billy Flinn is wearing a big heavy jacket with a fur lined top, suit, scarf and fedora hat
He has money and is seen as a big improtant man. Replaying the image of the Boss with big heavy expensive clothing
Miss Sunshine is wearing a fur lined coat, pearl neclace and earings and a decrotive hat
She is stylish, rich and an important character
All the other press are wearing only suits and a piece of fabric as a scarf if any
They aren't important
In the theater, roxy is wearing a blue plan yet good looking dress
She is pretty but plain and unintersting
Billy flin is wearing a striped suit and boe tie and a hat. He looks like a contriliquist
This is the character is is meant to be improvising
The actors playing the press are wearing heavy makeup making them look like puppets
They aren't really controlling what they are saying
Miss Sunshines skirt is black but the cuts underneath are red. She also doesn't look like a puppet
The red under the skirt shows from the outside it looks normal and standard (info) but really it is wrong (marker). Even though she is contolled by Billy Flinn she is is more independent than the other press
The hats and clothing of the civilians
Most are rich and it also shows date and setting

Acting style

What happens?
How is this effective
At the press confrence roxy begins by looking in control but then gets confused when when she begins talking
She want's to be in the center of attention but does not like the way that the she must act in order to portray her innocence
BF has a fake smile and only truly smiles when the press begins to chant what he has been telling them
He is an actor, however he finds joy in when the press begin to believe what he tells them even though he knows they are lies.

Also shown when he smiles and begins laughs in joy when he is a) pulling the strings b) and when when roxy in on his knees
BF, show signs of annoyance and “really” when roxy tries to steal the spotlight
It tells us that BF know what he is doing and how to 'play' the press, however when his clients intervear, it ruins his show
Whlist most of the press is looking desperate for information Miss. Sunshine holds her pose and is not in any rush
It shows that she is in control of that area of work and she know that she is in charge as does BF and the rest of the press
Mr. Hart is looking confused and does not understand fully about what is going on
He isn't into jazz and the themes that the character roxy is portraying thorough the film. We can tell is is the innocent character living in a corrupt world.

Briefly Describe the Setting/Location and the type of activity/ies would usually take place in this setting?

It is chicago in the 1930's (?) it is when they are at the height of the Jazz 'n' Crime stage. The jail in which it is set is 3 main places, A jail (black and polished bars, does not look dirty) A press conference (crème pillars, huge, heavy black doors and old fashioned cars. This setting is usually connected with crime's of passion.
A theater with golden pillars and layered backgrounds, red curtains and circular lights boarding the stage. This setting is allocated with shows where people will put on a performance where you believe in the protagionist's story.
The city of Chicago It shows a scene of chicago with tall industrial buildings with spires on the roofs. Very the same and concrete buildings (not glass etc). This shows the business end of Chicago and the successful working class.

What props have been included in the setting to convey an intended message or describe the activity/ies taking place?
In the jail cell, Roxy is seen to be reading her diary, this conveys to the audience that she likes to hear about her life and believes that she should be the focal point of attention the whole time
At the press conference, the use of old fashioned camera and microphones are used to show us that we are in the 1930's and in an upperclass part of Chicago. Billy Flinn is wearing a thick fur lined coat, suit, scarf and fedora. This is using the image of the “big boss” in the thick coat and expensive clothing to show Billy Flinn's character. The costume is also used to show Miss Sunshine's high and famous position in the press is expressed through her wearing a fur coat as well as pearl necklace and earrings with a decretive hat. These costumes contrast those of the remaining of the press for they are wearing only a plain suit and hat and occasionally a piece of material as a scarf.
In the theater Roxy is wearing a plain blue dress, sitting on Billy Flinn's knee whilst he is wearing a striped suit and rimmed hat imitating the looks of a contrilcoist.
Ms Sunshine's skirt in the scene is black on the outside like the colour of print but underneath, the skirt is red, siginalling that what she is writing may look substantial to the outside, it is really dangerous lies but like the public she only cares about the outside view on it.

What does the contrast (light levels, difference between dark or bright areas) indicate about this setting?

The cloudy lighting of the press conference scene contrasts the dark theater room indicating that though in the light, it looks like nothing dangerous is happening, what really is going on is secret and untruthful.
What type of tones or colours are used within the setting; pleasant, simple, cheery, bleak. (Also consider the lighting).
Though dark, the red tint to the scene highlights to the audience that what is happening on stage is dangerous because it is all lies that Billy Flinn is telling them and that he and Roxy both are concealing a murder. The red in the faces of Flinn and Roxy constrating their calm colours of their dress show that they both know it is murder but are dressing up to let the press believe that what they want them to

Describe the spaciousness of this setting (Cramped or open/roomy).

It is cramped for the press in the press conference but in the theater it is organized. Billy Flinn and Roxy always have their own space

Describe the physical state (messy, neat, formal).

In the press conference it is busy and hectic however on stage the sence of orginzed excitement is created by the syncronised dance from the press pupets and the spaciousness of them

What is the general atmosphere of this setting (what moods or feelings does it invoke)?

The dark and cloudy atmosphere of the setting invokes the audience to believe that Chacago, is dangerous and cold and the realtiy of the city is dull and boring, however, when in the theater, everything is exciting and busy.
Describe the acting style of the characters within this setting?

The acting style outside the theater is believable because of the seriousness of the characters. When in the theater, they overact slightly to fit the new “show-biz” characters. The acting is not overscale and it is believable allowing the audience to follow the story and appreachiate the characters.

How does this setting contribute to the acting style and character/s personality?

Being set in Chacago in the time where it is famous for its murder and jazz attitude to life, Billy flinn is a power hungry character who finds pleasure in when the press begin to tell the story he has created to keep hold of his record.
Roxy is a character who desperately wishes to be part of the show-biz life but does not appreatiate Billy Flinn's ways in which he wants her to act, it is shown that Billy Flinn does not like her style either because when she tries to take the spotlight, she fumbles as she does not understand what she is supposed to be doing and Billy Flinn is bringing her down as he steps into the spotlight.
